Bush Radio is offering space for newsroom recruits

Are you:

  • Interested in developing news that matters to the Cape Flats?
  • Curious, adventurous, always looking for a story, willing to hunt down a source, energetic?
  • Able to speak, write and read in English & Afrikaans or Xhosa?
  • Willing to explore new frontiers in media?
  • Able to work hard in a challenging environment?

Would you like to learn how to:

  • Record sound, conduct interviews, compile bulletins, read bulletins, take pictures, record video, cover events and test your skills LIVE to a listening and online audience of over 375 000 people.
  • Develop what it means to be journalist in a changing news environment?

If your answer to the above is yes, then a volunteer news trainee position in the Bush Radio newsroom is for you. (Download application form)

Things to pay attention to:

  • You will be required full-time with shifts (06h00 – 14h00 and 10h00 –18h00) – 5 days a week, including weekend and public holiday shifts.
  • You must be available to start immediately.
  • You will not receive payment! This is a full-time trainee position at Africa’s leading community radio station.
  • Transport allowance of R1500 per month for 3 months (probation).
  • Students attending class should not apply.
  • Candidates must be computer literate.
  • Candidates must be Cape Town based.
  • Understand, write and read English and one other language (Afrikaans or Xhosa)

Shortlisted candidates will be put through a combination interview, written test (for computer skills, language, general knowledge) and a voice test at a specified date.

Requirements:

  • Computer literacy compulsory (including excel, PowerPoint and word)

  • A passion for community media

  • Proven sales track record
  • Own transport

A basic salary with a competitive commission on sales will be paid.

Calling all young designers

cosatu PSA bush design 2018COSATU and Proudly South African are calling on young designers of clothing, jewellery, shoes or any other local products to participate in the Small Business Conference taking place on the 11 October 2018 from at the Cape Town Convention Centre.

Designers can participate in the fashion show to showcase their products and designs, and will also be given a stall for FREE to exhibit their work to businesses and industry.

The majority of the Bush Radio team have to rely on public transport to get to work and home. As most of us live on the Cape Flats taking this mode of transport can be scary at the best of times. Mkhuseli Veto was trekking home when he captured the following footage.

Then Bush Radio 89.5FM has just the position for you – Trainee Newsroom Co-ordinator.

We are looking for a dynamic, driven, hardworking and enthusiastic individual, with a basic understanding of the running of a newsroom, You must be willing to be mentored to help develop Bush Radio’s newsroom, in terms of policy, content, presentation (bulletins) editing and networking.

In return, Bush Radio will offer the candidate access to local and international training as it becomes available, as well as mentoring by senior Bush Radio management and experts in order for the candidate to develop into a fully-fledged radio news editor.

Duties will include: Ensuring that Bush Radio adheres to its newsroom polices, developing content to meet these requirements, all content published by the newsroom (i.e. bulletins, online articles, current affairs, features, etc) are of a high and constantly improving quality. Managing interns in the newsroom. Shift work as needed.

Basic journalism or media qualification and experience would aid application.

An excellent command of English and a good general knowledge is a requirement, as well as the command of one other Bush Radio broadcast language (Afrikaans or Xhosa)

This is a full-time contract position (1 year contract after 6 months’ probation) – Students SHOULD NOT apply.

Salary R 4 500 to R 6 000 based on skill level and experience.

Salary range: R60,000 – R84,000 per year depending on experience.

Skills required:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills .
  • Strong administrative and financial skills
  • Computer literacy (Word, Excel and internet / email)
  • Excellent reading and writing skills in English and Afrikaans or Xhosa.

Experience required:

  • Experience in administration and finance work environment.
