It was a long day, and I have been doing this for 25 years, more than half my life. Today, was the first time I've seen a minister stay, listen and engage with #communitymedia the entire day. The challenges are great, it is not going to be solved in a day - the people we serve as @bushradio are dying on the streets daily, our children going missing and our ever-present landlord's rent hangs over us like the sword of Damocles - so we need to find a solution yesterday. But today I have hope - "none but ourselves can free our minds", but that takes work and we lay the foundation for what our children will inherit. Democracy is not a spectator sport. It was the date chosen by the station to coincide with the launch of the first National Women's Day in 1995 to recognise the role women played in establishing community radio. We salute you. The station which lead and continues to the fight for the freedom of the airwaves in South Africa. In the years following democracy Bush Radio's added role of being an incubator for new media talent in South Africa can clearly be seen by the individuals who have gone on to serve in all sectors of the media industry and beyond. I could talk about Bush Radio being the first station to have dedicated hip-hop, reggae, african, drum and bass, electronic, psy music shows I could talk about Bush Radio being the first station to play kwaito I could talk about Bush Radio having the first LGBTI show I could talk about Bush Radio having a 70% local music policy since 2000 I could talk about the New York Silver Medal for programming I could talk about the bus driver who became a television presenter I could talk about the CPUT student who became an arts editor I could talk about the security guard who became a news trainee and then a scientist I could talk about the 16 year old who started a youth programme and then co-ordinated over 40 children to run the first youth produced, hosted radio programme I could talk about the ex-offender who became a producer and now teaches young people to produce organic food But community media in South Africa is in crisis, forced to compete with large commercial entities for advertising, unfulfilled government promises, consultations of "experts" without the involvement of people in the sector, organisations and individuals that milk the sector as a way of making a quick profit (or doctorate) without really contributing to the true development of the sector and all those PR companies that demand free space.... As a community radio station that continues to push the boundaries of using media to build young people, we can't wait for miracle cure, we have to do! And just like before it is up to us, the people, to help sustain and take Bush Radio to the next level.
