Step It Up for Gender Equality

The 8th of March 2016 marks International Women’s Day and to help celebrate the day, the women involved in Bush Radio (past and present) will be taking to the airwaves from 6am to 8pm to highlight the work, struggles and achievements of women.

Current women presenters on Bush Radio will be on air during the day and some new and old voices will be back on the airwaves. The male presenters will take a behind-the-scenes role by producing for some of the shows so that every woman currently working at the station – from those in admin, household, sales and reception – will take to the airwaves.

Even though it is not unusual for the Bush Radio airwaves to be filled with women’s voices, it was proposed that the station step it up for the day and swop around presenters for the day (eg: Lazola Solani who hosts the magazine programme Sakhisizwe will host the Breakfast Rush and our managing director, Brenda Leonard, will take on Sakhisizwe with former Bushnews editor, Lusanda Bill).

Stay tuned for the special The Women Who Built Bush Radio, hosted by Juanita Williams, AllAfrica.com managing editor (former Bush Radio news editor, trainer and gender issues programme producer and presenter). This programme will look back and speak with some of the women who have fought to free the airwaves and media in South Africa, and pay tribute to their contributions.

International Women’s Day will end with an outside broadcast from a City Of Cape Town Social Development, Subcouncil 9 and Early Childhood Development event in Khayelitsha.

The event will focus on awareness raising on issues that are pertinent to women, like eradicating domestic violence and entrepreneurship. The programme will also include guest speakers such as the Mayoral committee member for Social Development and Early childhood development, Suzette Little, and Minister of Small Business Development Lindiwe Zulu.
