Understanding the heart of good media (Anton Harber)

 

On 5 September 2017 Anton Harber*, Adjunct Professor of Journalism at the University of the Witwatersrand, paid a visit to Bush Radio.

As part of his visit we asked him to speak with the interns as part of our staff development sessions.

He shared his thoughts on a range of issues ranging from what makes a good story to fake news.

Anyone interested in journalism and the media should take a listen.

*Anton Harber is Adjunct Professor of Journalism. His research interests include journalism; media; and history of South African media. Harber is the Founding Editor of the Mail & Guardian newspaper (previously known as the Weekly Mail). Previously, he also worked as Sub-Editor for the Sunday Post and Sowetan newspapers and as Political Reporter for the Rand Daily Mail. Between 1997 and 2001, Harber was the CEO of Kagiso Broadcasting and between 1998 and 2001, he was the Executive Director of Kagiso Media Ltd. Harber has held a number of other positions such as Chair of the South African Conference of Editors (in 1991), Chair of the National Association of Broadcasters (in 1998) and Chair of the Freedom of Expression Institute (in 2010).  – source: University of the Witwatersrand

Back to School 2013 (pictures + audio)

All the members of the Bush Radio newsteam woke up very early today and headed to school along with the estimated 970 000 who started the 2013 school year.

Their job was a bit different than the eager students, they collected sound from principals, teachers, parents and most importantly the learners to share with all the Bush Radio listeners. We also had live crossings with several principals, parents and learners throughout the Breakfast Rush (6-9am).

MKK 2009 presents a bright future

Putting MKK 2009 together was not without its challenges, like others we too have suffered due to the economic meltdown.

 We are proud to say that the 10th Media Kidocracy Konference (MKK 2009) which ran from the 14th to the 18th December 2009 was a resounding success.

On the final day the young delegates (12 – 18 years old) presented their productions in a four hour closing ceremony which included video, online, graffiti and radio presentations.

 The closing ceremony also included performances by young Capetonian talent such as Shaz & B, Apple and Cinnamon and Grand Alliance.

The photographers have captured the contrast between the beauty of our natural landscape and the filth that soils it.

The television group challenged us to re-examine our so-called natural ways of being as men and women with respect to violence within the home.

The graffiti group showed through their piece that although we may differ linguistically and/or culturally, we can live in harmony.

The online and radio groups have spread the word that violence is not and never will be an option, be it violence inflicted by others through forced child labour or self-inflicted violence in the form of substance abuse.

Together these products send a resounding message that states that their vision for tomorrow is one in which they wish not to live in fear and is filled with hope.
