Opening streets and doors

28/09/2017

Facebook banner_Open Streets Main Road_Cropped

As part of Open Streets Main Road on Sunday, 1 October 2017, Bush Radio will be hosting a “Pavement Broadcast”, as well as an Open House.

Open Streets Main Road aims to bridge social and spatial divides in Cape Town by encouraging people to think differently about how we move around in the city. (visit Open Streets)

October 1’s Open Streets will be the longest to date. It will entail close to 5km along Main Road between Observatory and the city centre. The main road will be closed to motorised vehicles and it will become an open space for pedestrians, cyclists, skateboarders, wheelchair users and other non-motorised transport users to move in safety.

Alternative routes with hubs

Bush Radio’s Sunday programmes will be broadcast from outside the building at 330 Victoria Road in support of the activities for the day. We encourage listeners and supporters of the Open Streets initiative to pop by the station and talk with us.

People are also encouraged to come and check out the station where volunteers and staff will give guided tours of the station, and share information on the work of Africa’s oldest community radio station project.

Open Streets Main Road and the Bush Radio “Pavement Broadcast” and Open House runs from 10am to 3pm.

This Sunday on Bush Radio 89.5fm we launch two music programmes:

Retro-Rewind (10h00 – 12h00) hosted by Shiraz “Cazzman” Ramjee and The Love Booth (12h00 – 14h00) hosted by Sive Msolo (former Breakfast Rush and Everyday People).

Both hosts are no strangers to Bush Radio listeners; Shiraz helped the late Roger Lewis with the programme Sensual Sundays and Sive co-hosted the Breakfast Rush and Everyday People.

According to the Programme Integrator Adrian Louw, the addition of these two shows is “only the start of exciting changes that Bush Radio will implement as the station celebrates 18 years on air”.

Retro-Rewind will be spinning all the forgotten club classics ranging from the late 70s to late 90s. The first half of the show will concentrate on jazz and slow jams. The second half is more uptempo, playing disco classics that promise to make you get up and move. As the name says, we’ll be taking you back… to your school days, your first kiss, or maybe even your first broken heart.

The Love Booth will give you the best of Rhythm and Blues, mixing the new with the old. With an album of the week feature, artist features and your song of the week – The Love Booth is where lovers meet.

The Actor, the Canadian and the journalist

15/04/2011

This past week at Bush Radio was filled with several reunions at the station.

On Tuesday well-known stage and television actor Vinette Ebrahim popped into the station to talk to Denisia Adams about her current play “My Naam is Ellen Pakkies“, which is on at the Baxter Theatre.

Vinette Ebrahim and Denisia Adams

Vinette is most popular for her role in the soap opera 7de Laan, but we at Bush Radio remember her as the narrator of a series of
programmes we produced in 1998 with Molo Songololo, the national children’s rights network, called Silent Shame, Silent Crime which dealt with incest.

We pulled a recording from our archives and played it for her. Click here to listen

John Tottenham, Wesley Wessels (centre) and Janelle Nichols

We then had another visit from someone who was last at Bush Radio in 2004. John Tottenham was a participant in a programme run at the station with a group called Canada World Youth. John was a student at the University of Waterloo at that time and during the project he was teamed up with former Bush Radio trainee and now editor of The Dankish, Wesley Wessels, who also came along for the visit.

John is currently working for an engineering company in Canada and came to show his wife, Janelle, South Africa.

Also this week, former trainee producer and newsroom intern Rhode Marshall, now a content producer for the Mail and Guardian, came to say hi.

22/10/2010

At the end of August, Bush Radio and the Western Cape Education department launched a series of programmes in order to get Matrics ready to write their 2010 final exams.

The programmes were a big success, as it gave learners the chance to get advice from the actual people who draft and mark them.

Bush Radio has decided to make these programmes available online and so that learners could use them as a refresher and something to help ease their stress.

Please note we have compressed the files in order to save you bandwidth – should you want a high quality / cd copy of the programme call Sharon on 021 448 5450.
