UNESCO and Bush Radio present “Women and Technology”

Bush Radio in partnership with UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) is currently hosting a two-week training course for twelve women in community radio to produce radio features on women in the fields of science, technology and engineering.

At least one radio producer from each province of South Africa is included in the training with four coming from Western Cape stations.  “The stations included in the training are mix of urban, peri-urban and rural stations,” says Brenda Leonard, the managing director of Bush Radio.

This training is taking place from the 24^th October 2011 to the 4th November 2011, and will form part of a broader project called “Upgrading the technical and radio production skills of women in community radio to produce features and documentaries on women in science and engineering” that is funded by the UNESCO International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC). This activity falls within the framework of UNESCO contribution towards strengthening free, independent media and developing human capacity.

It is hoped that the project will not only benefit the women, but those radio stations they represent, and the broader community they broadcast too, as the skills attained during the training will improve the overall quality and content of each station.

Quanita Kamaar from Voice of the Cape said, “Participating in the training programme has enabled me to develop my skills and share what I have gained with the rest of the community.”

Another participant, Granny Makhinya from Phalaborwa FM, ended off by saying, “The training has given me the opportunity to develop my technical capabilities.”

Tune into the Bush Radio 89.5 FM Marathon pledge show

Tomorrow, Saturday the 1st October from 9am to 6pm, Bush Radio 89.5FM is going to be shaking up the airwaves in Cape Town and the world (via audio streaming on www.bushradio.co.za) by bringing you a marathon show as part of its 2011 Pledge Drive to help the Mother of Community Radio in Africa stay on air.

You will be able to hear some of the best specialist music and talk show presenters on the station drum up support for the station and call in your pledges to 021 448 5450 or SMS your message to 32158.

Starting at 9am, we have the legend of afternoon talk and community issues inCape Town, Bassie Montewa getting you ready to open your mind and, hopefully, your pockets to pledge.

Then another legend of radio broadcasting in South Africa, Tom London hosts the 10 to 12 slot and will be assisted by our King of the Mix, Freedom “Flex Darkskin” Raphela.

Our intrepid newsteam member Lusanda Bill will be live from 12h00 – 13h00, bringing you some smooth and silky sounds.

Then we go jazzy and old school, the three musketeers of radio get a chance to cut through 89.5 FM – so don’t forget to join Roger Lewis, Calvin Peters and Dr Victor Davids from 13h00 – 16h00.

At 4pm we bring a special edition of The Wrong Rock Show with Botha Kruger who will be joined by The Breakfast Rush’s Sive Msolo. You’ll be the judge of how that unusual combination of House and Rock will go down…

Ending off the marathon pledge drive from 5pm will be the team from the Unhappy Hour, who promise to take you on a musical journey into the recesses of your soul “where your grass is blue”.

Lusanda Bill

The shortest member of the Bush Radio newsteam with the biggest mouth – always up on current events and producing excellent radio features – Lusanda is proof that news does not have to be dry or boring, especially when combined with the smooth tunes she spins.

Roger Lewis

Just call him Mr Sensual, Roger spins the best in classics. If you want to reminisce or be re-educated on the hits tune into Roger. Nobody caresses the airwaves with more sensuality.

Calvin Peters

African TV Journalists on the Move

Bush Radio in partnership with the Deutsche Welle Akademie is currently (18 – 28 July 2011) holding a training workshop at the Bush Radio training facilities to a selected group of talented television journalists, camera operators and technicians from several television stations in Africa. The workshop aims to enable African journalists to “tell their stories” by producing professional TV reports and documentaries, and consequently offering their audiences an African perspective on relevant issues such as environmental protection, economic development, poverty reduction, health, education and good governance.

There are a diverse number of objectives that the workshop aims to achieve, including the improvement of the individuals skills as well as the promotion of African perspectives on social, economic and developmental issues. Trainers, Thomas Rehermann, Robert Donauer, Florian Kroker and Jan Bruck are doing their very best to ensure that the best training is being provided to the participants.

In the first stage the participants are divided up into teams consisting of a journalist, one camera operator and one picture editor. These teams are then given tasks and at the end of the workshop they are requested to produce at least one broadcast-quality report.

The workshop also aims to enhance reporting abilities, including, story selection, research, production organisation, camera work, the basic principles of editing, storytelling and writing for television.

Stages two and three are even more exciting than stage one. In stage two the team who produces the best report in stage one is identified, and then invited to develop these reports in co-operation with editors and technicians from Deutsche Welle-TV. Deutsche Welle will then distribute the reports through various channels to an international audience.

Stage three then allows the top 20 participants the opportunity to visit Germany. During this period, they will exchange views with decision-makers and opinion leaders, in order for authentic African perspectives on international issues to be discussed. This visit will also give participants the chance to learn more about German and European opinions about current issues.

The excitement of the participants is apparent at Bush Radio. Siraaj Larney from Cape Town TV said, “I have truly enjoyed the training thus far. It has broadened my knowledge and it has helped me build my confidence.”

Another participant, Anna Nicodemus from Namibia said, “I have been a journalist for quite some time, and I thought I knew all the tricks to journalism, up until this training. I will definitely be taking back a great wealth of knowledge with me. I hope that I will make it to Germany.”

Pennipher Sikainda from Muvi TV in Zambia said that the course has been excellent thus far, especially because it has been focusing on the training of TV production. She also said that the theme of the course “Africa On The Move” is wonderful since they have seen few stories depicting growth both socially and economically. She said that the lectures are fantastic, because they are sharing great tips that she could use to meet international broadcasting standards.

Richard Khoviwa from Malawi Broadcasting Corporation, said, “I have learnt many things with regard to editing and production. This is indeed useful to me because I deal with technical issues on a regular basis at my company.”
