Goodbye Victor J #RIP

02/05/2016

victor jantjies rip

The trainees, volunteers and staff of Bush Radio are saddened to announce the passing of our colleague and friend, Victor Jantjies.

We were informed early this morning by his family that Victor passed away in his sleep

We are unable to find the words right now to express the loss we feel of this wonderful person who brought light to station.

Victor joined Bush Radio in 1996 as a trainee from a media project and worked in various areas in the station. He is best remembered by listeners as the voice of the Breakfast Rush and Morning Cruise but he also served in various areas “behind the scenes”

Most recently Victor was standing in on the Morning Cruise and responsible for technical and music at the station.

We will keep listeners and friends updated to developments via this blog and our Bush Radio facebook groups.

Please feel free to share you memories of Victor here.

RIP – Randall Titus

11/03/2014

randall titusWe at Bush Radio are saddened to hear about the the passing of our former volunteer, Randall Titus.

Just after Bush Radio 89.5FM officially went on air in 1995, Randall and another volunteer Robert Moult initiated our first sports programme which was broadcast on Saturday afternoons.

Randall had a passion for local sport and brought this passion into the studio where he shared his knowledge and enthusiasm with all the Bush Radio listeners.

According to a press statement issued by Professor Brian O’ Connell, University of the Western Cape rector and vice chancellor, Randall was also a member of the University Council and served on various committees. We believe this is a true testament to the passion Randall had for the communities of the Western Cape.

Recently he also had meetings with Bush Radio to discuss various future projects.

We wish to send our condolences to the Titus family, and his colleagues and friends.

Learning and License

24/10/2013

It’s been a busy couple of weeks at Bush Radio.

We handed out Matric study packs to learners at Modderdam and Glendale High in partnership with Van Schaik Books, helped plan a careers day at St Agnes Primary in Woodstock, as well as hosted station and programme managers from various radio stations in southern Africa as part of our partnership on local radio with UNESCO.

All of this was made worth it by the announcement by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) that we have been granted a renewal on our broadcast license until October 2018!

Principal of Modderdam High, Mr Snyers said the timing of the stationery is perfect because this time of the year learners need all the support they can get. Principal Achmat Chotia of Glendale High said he was delighted and inspired by the donation made by Bush Radio and Van Schaik Bookstore to the matrics. “With all the support that the learners are getting from the community is an indication to the learners that they must know that there are people who care and wish they succeed” Chotia added.

Marketing Manager of Van Schaik Bookstore, Margaret Vyver-Rambau said they started this project after they realised that stationery is very important to a learner, especially during exams.

Vyver-Rambau added that it is important to work with the media in playing a part in encouraging children to study further as they are the future leaders.

Brand Manager, Melanie Foxcroft said to be involved in projects such as these are very important as Van Schaik believes in furthering education especially for young people.

St Agnes Primary careers day 2013

Each year St Agnes Primary School in Woodstock hold a career day where teachers hope to get learners to start thinking about career choices. As part of the day they get speakers from various fields to chat to the learners to help inspire and give them advice. Learners are encouraged to dress up to represent their chosen career and the teachers at the school get to put on school uniforms.

Bush Radio was asked if we could arrange a couple of guest speakers for the event and we called upon some of our volunteers and contacts to come help out. The children were thoroughly entertained, and inspired by Bhavna Singh (former Breakfast Rush team member and currently an ETV news anchor), Wayne Mckay (comedian, mc and presenter of Laid Back), Nathan Adams (The Daily Voice entertainment editor) and Yazeed Kamaldien (freelance photographer and journalist)

Bhavna Singh, Monde Kapa and Dennis Kofi

We thought it was time to make Cape Town’s airwaves interesting again!

Click here to listen to the promo

Bush Radio is pleased to announce that we have two new members on our breakfast team – and they’re starting stiptelik at 6am on Monday, May 9.

Monde Kapa: familiar for his work on Bush Radio, a few stints at regional and national radio stations, television and commercials (see Monde’s CV). Monde returns to Cape Town airwaves and our online/mobile radio audience as the host of the energetic and dynamic Bush Radio breakfast show.

Monde will be giving back to the station which has introduced many of the radio and television personalities you now see in South Africa.

His role will be to ensure that the Breakfast Show continues to deliver the best and most real radio Cape Town has to offer.

Bhavna Singh: who may be familiar to most through her work on South Africa’s first 24-hour news channel, as well as her print and online work, will join Monde in the studio.

Bhavna describes herself as Durbanite-turned-Joburger finding her way in the Cape on her blog, and what better way for her to experience the Mother City than through the Mother of Community Radio in Africa.

The youngest member of the team is Dennis Kofi – affectionately known in the office as Dennis the Menace. Bush Radio is giving this young buck a taste of media and also readying the world for him.

Other additions to the Breakfast Team will be announced over the course of the month, so stay tuned to 89.5 FM or visit www.bushradio.co.za.
