On Thursday the 20th June 2019, President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered his State of the Nation address to the people of South Africa via Parliament.

As usual the Bush Radio team was at the sitting covering all aspects of the speech, from expectations of civil society and political parties, the fashion and the protests.

“Activism: Past, Present and Future.” #TBT

On Human Rights Day (21 March 2019) Bush Radio broadcast live from Community House as part of their celebration of 34 years of activism.

One of the our international interns, Katherine Goguen from the United States compiled this video clip.

Besides being part of the organizing committee, we also had several interviews leading up to the day and spent the day at Community House broadcasting and engaging in the discussions and activities

Bush Radio is opening applications for internship positions for those interested in getting into media. No prior formal qualification is required.

The internship will provide basic experience in journalism, radio content production and multimedia.

Record sound, conduct interviews, compile bulletins, read bulletins, take pictures, record video, cover events, test your skills LIVE to a listening and online audience of over 375 000 people, generate interview ideas, liaise with guests, assist presenter, research, package and present, liaise with listeners regarding programmes, updating blogs/websites, present as needed / capable, participate in outside broadcasts or events, build your career and profile?

Requirements:

• No formal qualifications are required but the candidates must be computer literate and understand, write and read English and one other language (Afrikaans or Xhosa)
• You will be required full-time (ie Monday – Friday) or shifts (06h00 – 14h00 and 10h00 –18h00 –including weekend and public holiday shifts depending on the area you are placed.
• You must be available to start immediately.
• You will not receive payment! This is a volunteer internship at Africa’s leading community radio station. Transport allowance of R500 per month for 3 months (probation), increased to R 1000 thereafter, non-negotiable for 9 months.
• Shortlisted candidates will be put through a combination written test (for computer skills, language, general knowledge) and a voice test. – If selected for the test it will happen the week of the 25th September 2018

Back to School 2013 (pictures + audio)

All the members of the Bush Radio newsteam woke up very early today and headed to school along with the estimated 970 000 who started the 2013 school year.

Their job was a bit different than the eager students, they collected sound from principals, teachers, parents and most importantly the learners to share with all the Bush Radio listeners. We also had live crossings with several principals, parents and learners throughout the Breakfast Rush (6-9am).

The story of two video reports: Unemployment and Homosexuality in Black and White

The members of the Bush Radio newsroom recently produced two videos* as part of their training at the station. Besides their radio duties the volunteer run newsroom is exploring ways to use basic technology to share news content in a converged media environment. If you have any feedback on these video clips please mail ideas@bushradio.co.za or comment below.

Unemployment: Our goal with the unemployment video was to show the high rate of unemployment in South Africa.  Unemployment is directly linked to poverty.  Our goal was to show how one woman who lives in the township and is unemployed, how she lives and her daily struggles.  In the country the huge contrast between rich and poor is so visible and needs serious attention.

Homosexuality in Black and White: We have reported on stories such as the killing of Zoliswa Nkonyana who was stoned to death in Khayelitsha because she was a lesbian, which provoked outrage amongst activists.  This story and many similar ones in Cape Town made us decide on focusing on homosexuality with our second video.  Our goal with the homosexuality video was to show how differently gays and lesbians are treated in South Africa.

*The videos were shot using a Canon PowerShot A22 camera and edited on Windows Movie Maker.

Chad Saaiman shot

We learnt with great shock early this morning that musician Chad Saaiman, was shot in an alleged hijacking last night in Johannesburg.

Chad’s brother Lee, confirmed the shooting in an interview with the Breakfast Team this morning. (See Bushradionews)

Our thoughts are with Chad and his family as we wish him a speedy recovery.

Chad assisted Bush Radio with various events and projects.

Local journalists get world-class TV training

Bush Radio 89.5FM, in partnership with the Deutsche Welle (DW) Academy, is currently holding a 6-day Community TV and Local News training course (23 – 28 May 2011), for various participants with the aim of strengthening their skills as community television journalists.

The enthusiasm of the trainers, Birgit Keller and Martin Schönian, co-ordinator Christopher Springate and the participants is creating an infectious excitement that can be felt by all at Bush Radio’s studios.

Christopher Springate, the course co-ordinator said: “To be specific, we intend to enlighten the participants with their reporting, writing, researching, filming and editing skills.”

Birgit Keller said that as the trainers they are not doing the course to have the participants do things in a certain way, but rather to show them how it works. She also added that they are keen to show the participants how to manage current affairs in order to get ideas on how they can improve.

Participants are from various television and radio stations including Bay TV, CTV, Soweto TV, Radio KC, Bush Radio, Community Video Education Trust and the Oguni Solidarity Forum.

Lebogang Kubyane from Soweto TV said: “I am extremely impressed with the course and what it has to offer. The trainers are great people and it is comforting to know that I am able to learn new and interesting things everyday.”

The course started off with a general introduction and ranges from activities like editing vox-pops, writing for television, “on-camera” work and production editing.

Martin Schönian said, “The reason for the course being aimed at community journalists is because they have the responsibility to voice the communities’ opinions more often as opposed to commercial stations. Therefore they need to be highly skilled to do this task.”

Birgit Keller gave the final word on the participants and hosts: “I am really impressed with the participants. They are truly bringing forth a great amount of energy and good ideas. I also need to add that it is interesting to be at Bush Radio. The friendly staff and warm welcome which we receive creates a warm and good atmosphere for all.”

Bush Radio 89.5 FM’s Breakfast Team was joined by ETV‘s Lester Kiewit this morning to co-host the morning drive time show with Victor J.

We found out that the television journalist enjoys listening to the Breakfast Show (via Twitter) and we felt it was only right that he had an opportunity to join the craziness in the studio.

As if that wasn’t enough excitement for Victor J, Chad Saaiman joined them in the studio.

They discussed Saaiman’s new CD The Flight but – because the guest presenter and musician share a hairdresser – the conversation turned to their signature dreadlocks! And the speed at which Bush Radio gets up video, audio and pictures.

Why Wednesdays makes everyone Mal

Wednesdays are becoming popular for not only for its Maak Victor Mal slot but also for its general craziness. This morning was nothing unusual for the team but we thought we would share some of the happenings in studio with you.

Today the Breakfast team were joined by Stan1 for an interview and performance promoting his new single as well as Taxi Violence who trekked in for the Maak Victor Mal segment and played their track , Devil ‘n Pistol live.

 

The guys were also joined by Leole-Ann Francis from the Cape Town Festival and then Victor and Shiraaz received a surprise call from Zaki Ibrahim who is performing at the festival.

Capturing all this madness unique to the breakfast show was Ulrike Eichin from Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF) – a public-service German television channel, who along with other colleagues are working on a unique documentary covering the lives of South African’s in a 24 hour cycle.
