Celebrating 17 years of Community Radio

08/08/2012

On the 9th August 2012, National Women’s Day, we kick off a month of celebration at Bush Radio as we reach 17 years of legal community radio broadcasting in South Africa. Besides some of the fun activities planned for our birthday month we are also taking the opportunity of looking back and reflecting on the struggle to free the airwaves in South Africa and look at how we keep it free.

Bush Radio is also in the process of digitising its extensive archive of recordings and photographs and below is a sample of some the pictures – see if you can spot yourself and if you have material that you think belongs in the archive let us know.

Tune into the Bush Radio 89.5 FM Marathon pledge show

30/09/2011

Tomorrow, Saturday the 1st October from 9am to 6pm, Bush Radio 89.5FM is going to be shaking up the airwaves in Cape Town and the world (via audio streaming on www.bushradio.co.za) by bringing you a marathon show as part of its 2011 Pledge Drive to help the Mother of Community Radio in Africa stay on air.

You will be able to hear some of the best specialist music and talk show presenters on the station drum up support for the station and call in your pledges to 021 448 5450 or SMS your message to 32158.

Starting at 9am, we have the legend of afternoon talk and community issues inCape Town, Bassie Montewa getting you ready to open your mind and, hopefully, your pockets to pledge.

Then another legend of radio broadcasting in South Africa, Tom London hosts the 10 to 12 slot and will be assisted by our King of the Mix, Freedom “Flex Darkskin” Raphela.

Our intrepid newsteam member Lusanda Bill will be live from 12h00 – 13h00, bringing you some smooth and silky sounds.

Then we go jazzy and old school, the three musketeers of radio get a chance to cut through 89.5 FM – so don’t forget to join Roger Lewis, Calvin Peters and Dr Victor Davids from 13h00 – 16h00.

At 4pm we bring a special edition of The Wrong Rock Show with Botha Kruger who will be joined by The Breakfast Rush’s Sive Msolo. You’ll be the judge of how that unusual combination of House and Rock will go down…

Ending off the marathon pledge drive from 5pm will be the team from the Unhappy Hour, who promise to take you on a musical journey into the recesses of your soul “where your grass is blue”.

Visit http://bit.ly/r9OBIi for details on making a bank transfer to Bush Radio. Remember this pledge drive runs until the 3rd October 2011, but donations are ongoing.

Chad Saaiman on the Breakfast Show in February 2011

We learnt with great shock early this morning that musician Chad Saaiman, was shot in an alleged hijacking last night in Johannesburg.

Chad’s brother Lee, confirmed the shooting in an interview with the Breakfast Team this morning. (See Bushradionews)

Our thoughts are with Chad and his family as we wish him a speedy recovery.

Chad assisted Bush Radio with various events and projects.

Time to serve up a new breakfast team

Bhavna Singh, Monde Kapa and Dennis Kofi

We thought it was time to make Cape Town’s airwaves interesting again!

Bush Radio is pleased to announce that we have two new members on our breakfast team – and they’re starting stiptelik at 6am on Monday, May 9.

Monde Kapa: familiar for his work on Bush Radio, a few stints at regional and national radio stations, television and commercials (see Monde’s CV). Monde returns to Cape Town airwaves and our online/mobile radio audience as the host of the energetic and dynamic Bush Radio breakfast show.

Monde will be giving back to the station which has introduced many of the radio and television personalities you now see in South Africa.

His role will be to ensure that the Breakfast Show continues to deliver the best and most real radio Cape Town has to offer.

Bhavna Singh: who may be familiar to most through her work on South Africa’s first 24-hour news channel, as well as her print and online work, will join Monde in the studio.

Bhavna describes herself as Durbanite-turned-Joburger finding her way in the Cape on her blog, and what better way for her to experience the Mother City than through the Mother of Community Radio in Africa.

The youngest member of the team is Dennis Kofi – affectionately known in the office as Dennis the Menace. Bush Radio is giving this young buck a taste of media and also readying the world for him.

Other additions to the Breakfast Team will be announced over the course of the month, so stay tuned to 89.5 FM or visit www.bushradio.co.za.

A Bush-e moment

Faces for Radio: E-TV's Lester Kiewit (left) and Bush Radio's Victor J (right)

Bush Radio 89.5 FM’s Breakfast Team was joined by ETV‘s Lester Kiewit this morning to co-host the morning drive time show with Victor J.

We found out that the television journalist enjoys listening to the Breakfast Show (via Twitter) and we felt it was only right that he had an opportunity to join the craziness in the studio.

Dreadlock brothers: Lester Kiewit looks on while Chad Saaiman explains his hairstyle

As if that wasn’t enough excitement for Victor J, Chad Saaiman joined them in the studio.

They discussed Saaiman’s new CD The Flight but – because the guest presenter and musician share a hairdresser – the conversation turned to their signature dreadlocks! And the speed at which Bush Radio gets up video, audio and pictures.

Why Wednesdays makes everyone Mal

03/03/2010
Wednesdays are becoming popular for not only for its Maak Victor Mal slot but also for its general craziness. This morning was nothing unusual for the team but we thought we would share some of the happenings in studio with you.

Victor and ZDF's Ulrike Eichnin going through shot sets

Today the Breakfast team were joined by Stan1 for an interview and performance promoting his new single as well as Taxi Violence who trekked in for the Maak Victor Mal segment and played their track , Devil ‘n Pistol live.

The guys were also joined by Leole-Ann Francis from the Cape Town Festival and then Victor and Shiraaz received a surprise call from Zaki Ibrahim who is performing at the festival.

Capturing all this madness unique to the breakfast show was Ulrike Eichin from Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF) – a public-service German television channel, who along with other colleagues are working on a unique documentary covering the lives of South African’s in a 24 hour cycle.
