UPDATE: CREW applications for 2017 open

Due to requests from children, parents and teachers we have extended the deadline for CREW applications to the 1st May  2017, so that the necessary documentation that must accompany the application can be submitted.

Bush Radio is recruiting children and youth aged 6 – 18 years (or grade 1 – 11) to be trained as volunteer presenters and producers for our media project; Children’s Radio Education Workshop (CREW). CREW has been running since 1996 and celebrates it’s 21st Anniversary in 2017.

As part of this project, children are taught to research, produce and present their own radio programmes.

The programme is divided into three age groups and is on air every Saturday from 09h00 – 12h00.

We are using the following as criteria for selection and participation:

• Age (must be between 6 – 18 years old or Grade 1-11)
• Gender (balance between male and female)
• Language capabilities (English, Afrikaans and Xhosa speakers)
• Geographical area they live in (Greater Cape Town + Cape Flats)
• The willingness and ability to participate weekly as well cover their own transport costs to and from Bush Radio
• Adherence to CREW code of conduct
• Participants must provide their own packed lunch
• Weekly attendance is compulsory from 08h00 – 12h00
• Parent/Guardian participation in activities
• Selected participants must be available for a training session (date to be decided)

School holidays – a good time to learn

While everyone may be on school holidays in South Africa at Bush Radio it is always a good time to brush up or learn new skills.

In the first week of the holidays Bush Radio hosted the UNESCO Empowering Local Radio with ICTs for Bush Radio and Radio Atlantis.

The second week saw the young people who are part of the Children’s Radio Education Workshop (CREW) get further practical training.

All set for Children’s Radio Education Workshop 2013

Tomorrow, Saturday the 6th April 2013 sees the relaunch of the on-air part of Bush Radio’s Children’s Radio Education Workshop (CREW) project which has been running since 1996.

For the past week at the Bush Radio studios a group of young people drawn from various parts of Cape Town have been receiving introductory radio training and workshopping various topics for the programmes.

The CREW on-air programmes (Tots, Kids and Teens) are produced and hosted by the young people themselves – they are responsible for generating the content. It will be broadcast on 89.5FM as well as online.

The tots start at 9am, kids at 10am and the teens at 11am.

Young people tackle the media

Media Kidocracy Konference 2009 Bush Radio in association with the Children’s Radio Education Workshop (CREW) project is in the final stages of planning its 10th annual Media Kidocracy Konference (MKK).

The conference will take place from the 14th – 18th of December 2009 at St. Agnes Primary School in Woodstock.

Youth between the ages of 12 and 18 will get together to explore issues that are pertinent to themselves and their peers as well as use different forms of media to develop a media campaign that will create social awareness.

Topics will include: citizenship, child labour, substance abuse, language and culture, gender-based violence and pollution.

These will be explored through various media such as dance and/or drama, online and/or print, radio, T.V. and photography.

Through these media, they can critically appraise where they are now in life and how their current behaviour will help or hinder them achieve the future they want.

Background on MKK

As part of a growing need for youth participation in the decision-making process and policy formulation around children’s broadcasting, Bush Radio initiated a conference which would tackle these issues and also feed into this debate.

The Kidocracy (Kid-democracy) name was created for the event to denote a form of society characterized by social equality and acceptance of young people with representation for and by young people.

The Media Kidocracy Konference aims to establish critical awareness and understandings amongst young people by exposing youth to information and experiences that will enable them to identify issues they feel are relevant as well as explore the role of the media in creating an understanding of the social issue.

MKK also assists participants in devising strategies for addressing the social issues by using the media as a tool to help resolve and address these issues.
