South Africans Back at Lockdown Level 3 After Covid-19 Cases Surge

28/12/2020

South Africa is once again at Alert Level 3 due to a surge in confirmed cases of Covid-19, with some adjustments. Nearly 27,000 South Africans are known to have died from Covid-19.

“Under the adjusted Level 3 regulations: All indoor and outdoor gatherings will be prohibited for 14 days from the date hereof, except for funerals and other limited exceptions as detailed in the regulations, such as restaurants, museums, gyms, and casinos,” President Cyril Ramaphosa said.

This means restrictions on the sale and consumption of alcohol – a regulation that previously caused major controversy. South Africans were also called on to avoid closed spaces, crowded places and close contact with others.

Ramaphosa spoke to South Africans in a national address after a meeting on December 27 of the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) and special sessions today of the President’s Coordinating Council (PCC) and Cabinet.

“The nationwide curfew will be extended from 9pm to 6am. Apart from permitted workers and for medical and security emergencies, nobody is allowed outside their place of residence during the curfew,” he said.

The move, Ramaphosa said, is being done to limit super-spreader events further, and will adjust previous level 3 regulations to keep the economy as open as possible.

Key adjusted Level 3 regulations:

Wearing a cloth mask or similar covering over the nose and mouth is again mandatory when in public

Extended curfew – from 9pm to 6am

New hotspots were declared in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Western Cape and North West

All indoor and outdoor gatherings will be prohibited for 14 days, with an exception to funerals and places like restaurants and gyms. These exceptions will be clarified in the official regulations.

Alcohol sales from retail outlets and onsite consumption are banned. The prohibition on the public consumption of alcohol remains.

Businesses will continue to operate, subject to guidelines. Nightclubs and businesses that rely on alcohol sales will not be allowed to operate.

All beaches, dams, rivers and public parks and public pools in hotspot areas will be closed to the public.

All regulations take effect at midnight on December 28, 2020.

How #lockdown will end

23/04/2020

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the phased easing of restrictions once the lockdown period ends.

“We cannot take action today that we will deeply regret tomorrow. We must avoid a rushed re-opening that could risk a spread, which would need to be followed by another hard lockdown, as has happened in other countries. We have to balance the need to resume economic activity with the imperative to contain the virus and save lives.”

Certain regulations and restrictions will remain in place and an alert system will be implemented nationally and in each province.

There will be five coronavirus alert levels:

Level 5 means that drastic measures are required to contain the spread of the virus to save lives.

Level 4 means that some activity can be allowed to resume subject to extreme precautions required to limit community transmission and outbreaks.

Level 3 involves the easing of some restrictions, including on work and social activities, to address a high risk of transmission.

Level 2 involves the further easing of restrictions, but the maintenance of physical distancing and restrictions on some leisure and social activities to prevent a resurgence of the virus.

Level 1 means that most normal activity can resume, with precautions and health guidelines followed at all times.

To ensure that our response to the pandemic can be as precise and targeted as possible, there will be a national level and separate levels for each province, district and metro in the country.

We are currently at Level 5, which requires a full national lockdown to contain the spread of the virus.

This is the highest level of lockdown and was imposed when drastic action was necessary to curb transmission.

The following is a statement issued on behalf of Bush Radio by Adrian Louw, Programme Integrator.

Dear Bush Radio listeners and supporters,

Due to the lockdown as announced by our government to help curb the spread of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID19) we are forced to go onto automated playout systems from 19h00 tonight.

Most of our volunteers, staff and trainees make use of public transport which will be limited during the lockdown, and we need to keep them safe.

We have also implemented remote systems which will enable us to keep you informed of developments (24/7) around the lockdown, as well as other news, advice, alerts and public service announcements.

We hope to ease the lockdown blues with some of the best and most interesting radio programming you’ve come to expect from 89.5FM. These will include special collaborations with local artists, music specials, radio features, drama, and international news and talks ranging from Noam Chomsky to Angela Davis.

Please keep the members of the lockdown team in your thoughts. They’ll be in the studio bringing you live content daily.

We urge all our listeners and supporters to stay safe and practice compassion.

These are tough times but we at Bush Radio will continue to light a candle instead of cursing the darkness.
