After intense planning and a busy week the 12th Annual Media Kidocracy Konfrence (MKK2012) came to an end on Friday, the 14th of December 2012.
About 80 youth delegates (aged 12 – 21) drawn from all over the country, SADC and as far away as Northern Ireland attended MKK.
Below are the “products” which showcase how the young people interpreted the various themes outlined for this year. For a large percentage of the delegates this was the first time they had been directly involved in the production of media. A strong element of all the MKK conferences have been linking a practical implementation of ideas generated in the various intensive panel discussions and workshop groups.
This year’s theme was Youth Participation in Democracy, with sub-themes being:

The state of South Africa cities currently sits on a crossroad of possible futures, articulated in urban design, architecture, design, the arts and social studies. The dichotomies of formal and informal structures circulate and merge with boundaries that extend beyond the physical borders of supposedly defined urban spaces.

The show continues to create a platform for debate and discussion around design with a special emphasis on how we define the concept of design, and how do we use it to raise social issues.
In today’s show we look at “Supporting Designers” – the current recession has had an umistakeable impact on the South African economy, with many businesses struggling to remain open.
In this context, will we be celebrating the 2014 Design Capital with destitute designers and local buyers? Has government supported designers enough during the financial crisis, or is it left to designers, as creative and intelligent thinkers, to create their own self-funded businesses?

With Cape Town being named as the 2014 Design Capital, focus is falling on the design field, where South Africa is arguably behind in comparison to the international design market.
One of the problems that plague the industry is a general misconception and misuse on the concept of ‘design’, and a general lack of understanding within the South African business environment on the potential of design.

Bush Radio 89.5 FM will be providing coverage of the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to various radio stations and other media organisations in South Africa and around the world for the duration of the conference (28 November – 9 December 2011) in Durban.

This year marks the 17th meeting of the Conference of Parties (COP17), which takes place annually, highlighting the significance of “climate change”. Bush Radio supported by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung is hosting a series of consultative meetings with civil society organisations to discuss their plans for COP17 and how Bush Radio could assist with publicising and broadcasting the planned events and activities.

On Monday, 14th November 2011, Bush Radio, in partnership with Sub-Council 9 in Khayelitsha and Radio Zibonele, hosted a public meeting on COP17, at the Thusong Multi-purpose Centre, to discuss the issues of climate change and its impact on communities.

Guest speakers included Sheryl Ozinsky from the City of Cape Town’sClimate Smart, who informed the audience about various information regarding “Climate Change” and Misha Teasdale from Greenpop, who showed the individuals how they should plant trees.

The event included lots of fun and laughter and ended with the guests receiving lunch and a tree as a gift to take home for them to plant in their own communities.
