13 February is World Radio Day. A day we celebrate the power of radio in our lives. This year UNESCO’s theme for the day is “Dialogue, Tolerance and Peace”.
We thought it appropriate that we ask our listeners, supporters, trainees and everyone who has used the medium to send us whatsapp video clips (because community radio moves with the times).
We received clips from listeners, Alternative Radio, BBC, activists, media professionals, editors and artists. The range of the responses we received clearly shows that Bush Radio lives up to this year’s theme of “Dialogue, Tolerance and Peace”. More than just being one of the most sort after training radio stations, it truly is building bridges between the various communities we serve.
Bush Radio volunteers and staff would like to thank everyone for their messages of support and offers of assistance as we mourn the loss of Victor Jantjies.
The station has put together a small committee to oversee how we could assist the family in the best possible way.
All individuals, friends and groups who wish to make a financial donation to help with the funeral arrangements for Victor, can use the bank details below to make their contribution.

The trainees, volunteers and staff of Bush Radio are saddened to announce the passing of our colleague and friend, Victor Jantjies.
We were informed early this morning by his family that Victor passed away in his sleep
We are unable to find the words right now to express the loss we feel of this wonderful person who brought light to station.
Victor joined Bush Radio in 1996 as a trainee from a media project and worked in various areas in the station. He is best remembered by listeners as the voice of the Breakfast Rush and Morning Cruise but he also served in various areas “behind the scenes”
Most recently Victor was standing in on the Morning Cruise and responsible for technical and music at the station.
We will keep listeners and friends updated to developments via this blog and our Bush Radio facebook groups.
Please feel free to share you memories of Victor here.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE VENUE HAS CHANGED TO RAGAZZI DUE TO THE FIRE AT IBUYAMBO
Guitarist and hip hop artist Jitsvinger (Quintin Goliath), and hip hop producer and beat maker Arsenic(Gary Erfort)- collectively known as Jitsenic – will again join forces on Thursday May 24, at Ragazzi ,33 Long Street The iBuyambo Music and Arts Exhibition Centre, for a live set of experimental trigger rhythms coupled with a combination of rock, blues and Cape jazz.
Audiences can expect an eclectic, though futuristic mix of experimental sounds influenced by home-grown Cape jazz pioneers, as well as the golden era of hip hop.
The idea behind the music, says the pair, “Is to use familiar sounds, but to take those sounds to an unknown place while still relying on our skills to redefine the way that local music is created.”
Arsenic will bring to the fore finger drumming techniques and will trigger samples to create layers of sound adding to Jitsvinger’s poetic rhythms and jazz-influenced guitar-fuelled performance.
The night will see a special performance by Cape Town-based LnJ (Jill Levenberg and Razak Johnson) – two theatrically trained poets, singers and songwriters. This is a must-see performance, not to be missed.
Bush Radio is pleased to announce that we have two new members on our breakfast team – and they’re starting stiptelik at 6am on Monday, May 9.
Monde Kapa: familiar for his work on Bush Radio, a few stints at regional and national radio stations, television and commercials (see Monde’s CV). Monde returns to Cape Town airwaves and our online/mobile radio audience as the host of the energetic and dynamic Bush Radio breakfast show.
Monde will be giving back to the station which has introduced many of the radio and television personalities you now see in South Africa.
His role will be to ensure that the Breakfast Show continues to deliver the best and most real radio Cape Town has to offer.
Bhavna Singh: who may be familiar to most through her work on South Africa’s first 24-hour news channel, as well as her print and online work, will join Monde in the studio.
Bhavna describes herself as Durbanite-turned-Joburger finding her way in the Cape on her blog, and what better way for her to experience the Mother City than through the Mother of Community Radio in Africa.
The youngest member of the team is Dennis Kofi – affectionately known in the office as Dennis the Menace. Bush Radio is giving this young buck a taste of media and also readying the world for him.
Other additions to the Breakfast Team will be announced over the course of the month, so stay tuned to 89.5 FM or visit www.bushradio.co.za.
Besides catching up with some of the Bush Radio presenters, staff and volunteers. The G-Spot has organised a strong line-up of local artists like Salome, Carmen Xclusive, N2, The Instrumentals and many more to provide entertainment at the event.
