A gentle giant in Cape Town’s rich music and activist history has fallen.
Ebrahim Linneveldt, known to many as simply Sledge passed away earlier this week.
Amongst all his many activities Sledge was also a Bush Radio volunteer and used to host a Sunday programme called “Gister se Dinge” – A programme hosted by various other Cape Town legends like Vincent Kolbe, Joe Schaffers, Zelda Benjamin and more.
Host of Jazz on Bush, Dr Victor Davids recalled his memory of Sledge; “On 5 January 2000,at the welcoming function of Jazzathon held at West End, I was introduced to an amazing soul that was larger than life, while talking to Kenny Blake of the Super Heads Up Band, who gave me a saxophone mouthpiece, in a loud, but firm voice Sledge replied, what a great gift you are exchanging at the most Southern tip of Africa. That was the start of a friendship, that ended on 5 January 2021, when news broke of his passing. Sledge was an amazing gentleman, humble, caring, and had the ability to make one feel comfortable. He hosted a show Gister se Dinge, on Bush Radio which followed my show, with absolute passion and commitment. A big tree has fallen in the Cape Town entertainment world.”
Long-time Bush Radio Volunteer and entertainment industry professional, Calvin Peters said; “Sledge was larger than life and he had a phenomenal presence and aura that would literally fill a room.”
This week’s edition of Retro-Rewind (Sunday, 10 January 2021 from 10am to 2pm) will be dedicated to Sledge.
