Tune into Bush Radio via 89.5FM or online this Sunday (16 October 2016) at 8pm as we celebrate 20 years of Blues in the Bush with Dr Ian Bell.

With its roots firmly in African soil, yet germinating in a far continent in conditions of slavery and extreme hardship, the Blues has flowered and grown over generations to be the single greatest influence in modern popular music. Dr Bell (yes a real medical professional) has an extensive collection of rare blues albums and plays the music, as well as providing detailed information about the evolution of blues, the social and cultural contexts of the music, and information about individual tracks.

Since October 1996, a tasty two hours of the best of The Blues, along with something of its history, origin, development, sociology and biography, is prescribed every Sunday evening  as immunisation against the rest of the week!

17 years later and the Blues keeps getting sweeter

Helping you dance away the Sunday blues

This Sunday on Bush Radio 89.5fm we launch two music programmes:

Retro-Rewind (10h00 – 12h00) hosted by Shiraz “Cazzman” Ramjee and The Love Booth (12h00 – 14h00) hosted by Sive Msolo (former Breakfast Rush and Everyday People).

Both hosts are no strangers to Bush Radio listeners; Shiraz helped the late Roger Lewis with the programme Sensual Sundays and Sive co-hosted the Breakfast Rush and Everyday People.

According to the Programme Integrator Adrian Louw, the addition of these two shows is “only the start of exciting changes that Bush Radio will implement as the station celebrates 18 years on air”.

Retro-Rewind will be spinning all the forgotten club classics ranging from the late 70s to late 90s. The first half of the show will concentrate on jazz and slow jams. The second half is more uptempo, playing disco classics that promise to make you get up and move. As the name says, we’ll be taking you back… to your school days, your first kiss, or maybe even your first broken heart.

The Love Booth will give you the best of Rhythm and Blues, mixing the new with the old. With an album of the week feature, artist features and your song of the week – The Love Booth is where lovers meet.

UPDATE: JITSENIC – Combining Arsenic and Jitsvinger

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE VENUE HAS CHANGED TO RAGAZZI DUE TO THE FIRE AT IBUYAMBO

Guitarist and hip hop artist Jitsvinger (Quintin Goliath), and hip hop producer and beat maker Arsenic (Gary Erfort)- collectively known as Jitsenic – will again join forces on Thursday May 24, at Ragazzi ,33 Long Street The iBuyambo Music and Arts Exhibition Centre, for a live set of experimental trigger rhythms coupled with a combination of rock, blues and Cape jazz.

Audiences can expect an eclectic, though futuristic mix of experimental sounds influenced by home-grown Cape jazz pioneers, as well as the golden era of hip hop.

The idea behind the music, says the pair, “Is to use familiar sounds, but to take those sounds to an unknown place while still relying on our skills to redefine the way that local music is created.”

Arsenic will bring to the fore finger drumming techniques and will trigger samples to create layers of sound adding to Jitsvinger’s poetic rhythms and jazz-influenced guitar-fuelled performance.

The night will see a special performance by Cape Town-based LnJ (Jill Levenberg and Razak Johnson) – two theatrically trained poets, singers and songwriters. This is a must-see performance, not to be missed.

Jitsenic will perform at Ragazzi ,33 Long Street The iBuyambo Music and Arts Exhibition Centre, 11 Bree Street, Cape Town, on Thursday May 24, from 9pm. Entry is R30.
