Calling all young designers

COSATU and Proudly South African are calling on young designers of clothing, jewellery, shoes or any other local products to participate in the Small Business Conference taking place on the 11 October 2018 from at the Cape Town Convention Centre.

Designers can participate in the fashion show to showcase their products and designs, and will also be given a stall for FREE to exhibit their work to businesses and industry.

Media conference empowers youth for the 13th year #MKK2013

A Bush Radio 89.5FM project, the Media Kiodcracy (kid+democracy) conference is taking place from the 22nd – 27th September in Grabouw. MKK is a youth media conference for participants aged 12 – 18 years and provides them with skills and knowledge to produce various forms of media. This year, MKK will produce radio, television, photography, online, drama and art. Two newspapers will also be produced, one before, and one during the conference.

The theme for this year’s conference is “The Role of Media in Democracy”.

The Managing Director of Bush Radio, Brenda Leonard said that “MKK is taking place in a historic year for media in South Africa. Bush Radio is celebrating 20 years since its first illegal broadcast, and 18 years of legal broadcasting. The National Community Radio Forum (NCRF) is also celebrating 20 years of its existence.“

Bush Radio initiated the then Radio Kidocracy Konference, which changed to the Media Kidocracy Konference in 2006. Initially it started as a conference where children could talk about issues and policies in broadcasting affecting them directly, to make their voices heard. With the changing landscape of media in South Africa, we decided to include other forms of media in 2006, and with this, the Media Kidocracy Konference (MKK) was born.

Delegates are expected from community radio stations across South Africa, youth groups and schools, and will include over 90 youth participants.

Today, MKK as an opportunity for youth to reflect their views on the issues on the table, discuss how the media portrays these issues, and then produce the type of media that talks directly to the youth. The skills and information they gain over the five days is part of, not only strengthening their knowledge and skill set, but also strengthening democracy in South Africa.

Background on MKK

As part of a growing need for youth participation in the decision-making process and policy formulation around children’s broadcasting, in 2000 Bush Radio initiated a conference. The Kidocracy (Kid-democracy) name was created for the event – to denote a form of society characterised by social equality and acceptance of young people with representation for and by young people.

The Media Kidocracy Konference aims to establish critical awareness and understanding among young people by exposing youth to information and experiences that will enable them to identify issues they feel are relevant, as well as explore their role in media and social issues. MKK also assists participants in devising strategies for addressing social issues by using the media as a tool to help resolve and address these issues.

Debating the Spear

On Tuesday 5 June 2012 at the African Arts Institute offices in Union House, playwright and Executive Director of the Institute, Mike van Graan chaired a panel discussion/forum which considered the implications to artists of the uproar about Brett Murray’s controversial SPEAR painting. It was hosted by Arterial Network. A lively debate, occasionally slightly anarchic, ensued.

Nigel Vermaas, who attended the forum, assembled a 17.30 minute version of the two-hour event for his Arts Update in Friday’s Sakhisizwe show (8 June). Inevitably the choices made will not find favour with all, much nuance is, of course, lost, and some of the edits are a bit abrupt – but the gist is there.

A tale of two cities

The state of South Africa cities currently sits on a crossroad of possible futures, articulated in urban design, architecture, design, the arts and social studies. The dichotomies of formal and informal structures circulate and merge with boundaries that extend beyond the physical borders of supposedly defined urban spaces.

In a night of discussion and exhibition dsgnTête-à-Tête, the flagship discussion platform of MoDILA and broadcast in partnership with Bush Radio 89.5FM every Thursday at 2:30 pm, hosts A Tale of [2+1] Cities, where renowned international experts in the fields of architecture and urban studies will debate with the public on their perspectives of local and global future cities.

All designers and creatives are welcome!

The discussion will be followed by an electronic exhibit of works from the Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation, Columbia University, New York entitled Design intelligence Africa and from the University of Cape Town Architecture @ UCT – issues and themes at the Cape Institute for Architecture.

TVA (The Villianous Animators) - Mantis, Mak1 and Falko preparing a piece on the Bush Radio building

In 2002 in response to a proposed by-law and media reports (see: Cape Town vows to rub out graffiti artists) on the outlawing of graffiti in Cape Town, Bush Radio and members of the Hip Hop community organised several protests to highlight their concerns.

One of the protests involved creating a piece on the Bush Radio building.
