On February 4th Bush Radio presenters Eugene Mathews and Roché Kester received the Media award at the 5th annual Evh Pink Award for their weekly LGBTQIA radio show called The Salon.
The 5th annual Evh Awards, which was held at the Black Pearl in Lansdowne, is the brain child of former Miss Gay Western Cape, Enigma von Hamburg. The awards look to show appreciation, celebration and recognition within the LGBTI community and supporters who dedicate their time, expertise and resources in the advancement of LGBTI rights and the wider LGBTI community.
The Salon, was nominated in the media category. After a public voting process and consideration from an adjudication panel, The Salon nabbed the Media award.
The Salon is currently the only LGBTI radio show to be found on terrestrial radio and focuses on empowering, educating and bring awareness to and about the LGBTI community in Cape Town. National and global issues which effect the LGBTI community are also discussed and highlighted on the show. The content ranges from serious issues such as health and legislation to pageants and social events applicable to the LGBTI community.

Yesterday (21 January 2013) Bush Radio hosted students from Goucher College in the United States of America.
The group was accompanied by their Political Science and International Relations lecturer, Eric Singer.
The visit was part of the students’ three-week journey researching about South Africa’s history, political and social dynamics.
“This is our third week here; so far we have met with the media, activists, farm workers and street vendors to get a better understanding of the complexity of changes facing South Africa” Singer said.
The group found out how ethnicity, culture, class and gender are involved in society’s ability to solve the country’s social challenges.
“The students are aged between 19 and 23, most have never been outside of their home country, and were shocked that some of the problems they faced back home were the same in South Africa” Singer added.
Singer said that what they have learnt in South Africa was that creating change is not about drafting legislation or forking out money, it is about communities creating space for social development.
While the parliamentary precinct was buzzing with journalists, politicians and celebrities (see the slideshow) last night waiting for the 2012 State of the Nation address (SONA2012), Bush Radio was at the Portlands Indoor Sports Centre in Mitchells Plain with members of the community, local politicians and activists. Bush Radio 89.5 FM will be providing coverage of the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to various radio stations and other media organisations in South Africa and around the world for the duration of the conference (28 November – 9 December 2011) in Durban.

For the past three months, we have been running our climate change – COP17 campaign, which consists of community dialogues, training for broadcasters and running a news desk during COP17.
In the past two weeks (7 – 18 November) our offices have reverberated with the words COP17 and climate change – training and equipping broadcasters to demystify the issues of climate change and COP17, and enabling them to engage in debates at their stations.

Bush Radio, in partnership with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, developed a training course which brought together radio journalists from throughout South Africa. With the training, the broadcasters will be able to highlight the issues of climate change and translate these issues to their various communities in a clear and efficient way. In order to acheive this, briefings were held with various stakeholders in the area of climate change – these included the public, scientists, activists, civil society, politicians, international broadcasters and the United Nations. The course also upgraded their production and journalism skills.
