Local and International support for Bush Radio

03/11/2011

We have been really grateful to all the people who have given and shared goodwill with us to help keep the station going. The support has been amazing, from Aunty Val who dropped off sugar and tea, to singers Lira and Thandiswa Mazwai who recorded messages of support for us.

Appeals have also gone international; former interns have donated and our friends at Public Acheivement* in Northern Ireland have put together a screening of the Academy Award winning film Tsotsi this Sunday the 6th November 2011.

You can lend your financial support to Bush Radio by donating (CLICK HERE) or supporting us with your advertising.

* Public Achievement is Northern Ireland’s leading youth-focussed civic education organisation, and over the last 9 years they have been a partner with Bush Radio in a variety of projects including a youth project addressing violence as experienced by young people.

Tomorrow, Saturday the 1st October from 9am to 6pm, Bush Radio 89.5FM is going to be shaking up the airwaves in Cape Town and the world (via audio streaming on www.bushradio.co.za) by bringing you a marathon show as part of its 2011 Pledge Drive to help the Mother of Community Radio in Africa stay on air.

You will be able to hear some of the best specialist music and talk show presenters on the station drum up support for the station and call in your pledges to 021 448 5450 or SMS your message to 32158.

Starting at 9am, we have the legend of afternoon talk and community issues inCape Town, Bassie Montewa getting you ready to open your mind and, hopefully, your pockets to pledge.

Then another legend of radio broadcasting in South Africa, Tom London hosts the 10 to 12 slot and will be assisted by our King of the Mix, Freedom “Flex Darkskin” Raphela.

Our intrepid newsteam member Lusanda Bill will be live from 12h00 – 13h00, bringing you some smooth and silky sounds.

Then we go jazzy and old school, the three musketeers of radio get a chance to cut through 89.5 FM – so don’t forget to join Roger Lewis, Calvin Peters and Dr Victor Davids from 13h00 – 16h00.

At 4pm we bring a special edition of The Wrong Rock Show with Botha Kruger who will be joined by The Breakfast Rush’s Sive Msolo. You’ll be the judge of how that unusual combination of House and Rock will go down…

Ending off the marathon pledge drive from 5pm will be the team from the Unhappy Hour, who promise to take you on a musical journey into the recesses of your soul “where your grass is blue”.

Visit http://bit.ly/r9OBIi for details on making a bank transfer to Bush Radio. Remember this pledge drive runs until the 3rd October 2011, but donations are ongoing.

The signage that greets you on arrival at the Bush Radio offices

Dear Friend,

For more than two decades Bush Radio has been at the forefront of broadcasting in South Africa, playing an integral part in the development and advancement of both the industry and individuals in the local broadcasting landscape.

Over the past three years, however, this pioneering radio station and training centre has been hit hard by the current economic climate, recently resulting in Bush Radio having to re-evaluate its operations in order to remain sustainable and influential in this fast-changing and exciting environment.

From campaigning against the apartheid government for a free and independent broadcasting authority, to being present on Cape Town’s Grand Parade when Nelson Mandela addressed the nation as a free man, Bush Radio has played an indelible part in the shaping of the history of the new South Africa.

Tragically, this institution and symbol of media freedom is teetering on the brink of closure unless it can find a substantial amount of cash to cover rent, transmission and other running costs.

Watch a video clip of some of the training done at Bush Radio (click here):

Our landlord has given us until the 31 August to come with a tangible proposal, and we have decided to use this time to try and raise this money. The total cost we are trying to raise is R300,000 = Euro 30,000 = US $ 43,000.

Bush Radio provides a valuable, relevant and much-needed service in the communities of the Western Cape. Our legacy of assisting and being supported by communities all around the Cape is extensively documented, and due to our role as the pioneer of community radio in South Africa, we feel that our work is not yet done.

Bush Radio provides broadcast training to individuals, radio stations and media institutions in Africa, with a special focus in all the countries of Southern Africa. Bush Radio also has partnerships with organisations such as Public Achievement in Northern Island, which focuses on youth development and civic participation.

We hereby request you to assist us in this fundraising venture by making a donation, requesting your friends and colleagues to make a donation, or asking your company to make a donation.

All donations, irrespective of size, are welcome.

Donations can be paid directly into Bush Radio’s bank accounts and the details are:
