Cementing partnerships – Bush Radio and Deutsche Welle

Bush Radio 89.5 FM and Deutsche Welle recently signed a rebroadcasting agreement to continue our partnership which started in 1992.

Brenda Leonard, Bush Radio’s Managing Director says; “We are very happy with the continued partnership with DW as it brings a unique flavour to programming and enhances our training role within the broadcast sector in South Africa and the region as a whole.”

The agreement with the international broadcaster is also inline with the Bush Radio philosophy of building partnerships which will have benefits not only to the listening audience but also the media sector through training opportunities offered by the station.

Naser Shrouf, Head of Distribution Africa/ Middle East at Deutsche Welle says; “We believe that community radio is a very important way to assist in education, for social development, strengthening the civil society and therefore contributing to democracy,”

Launching a Hometown Hit

Join us this Sunday, the 28th November 2010 from 12pm at The G-Spot for a Bring ‘n Braai, CD Launch and a live broadcast with Roger Lewis, Victor Davids and Wayne Mckay.

Besides live entertainment organised by the G Spot Leisure Lounge and The Western Cape Musician’s Organisation (WCMA), the event will also see the launch of Bush Radio’s first popular music compilation CD called Hometown Hits put together with Cape Town Sound.

The CD features various artists who have been popular on 89.5FM. A few of the artists on the 19 track compilation are: Blackkurrant, Byron Clarke, Chad Saaiman, Alistair Izobell, Keeno Lee, The Boyz, Edith, Richard Ceasar, Tim Moloi, Thabo Mdluli, McCoy Mrubata and Shaz & B etc.

The song “Hometown” by Grant Perez featuring St. Emmo is exclusively available on this CD.

No time for Silence

As part of Bush Radio’s 16 days of activism campaign (25th November – 10th December 2010) we have planned a series of outside broadcasts from various organisations around Cape Town.

Tune into Sakhisizwe on 89.5 FM or online every weekday from 12h00 during the 16 Days of Activism.  (see schedule below)

The objectives of the outside broadcasts are to:

  • raise awareness on the 16 days of activism campaign
  • highlight the work of your NGO, CBO or place of safety
  • highlight the activities planned for the 16 days of activism campaign and mobilise listeners to support these activities

Let’s break the silence and put an end to abuse.

Training Opportunity: Western Cape Community Radio volunteers

Bush Radio, in partnership with the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (NEMISA), is conducting a part-time course in radio journalism from January to April 2011.

We are inviting applicants from community radio sector in the Western Cape that have an interest in news and current affairs, to apply for this course.

The programme will achieve the following outcomes:

•     Recording sound in studio and from location

•     Collecting information for journalistic use

•     Interview for journalistic purposes

•     Presenting a journalistic story

•     Report for a variety of journalistic purposes

•     Operating studio equipment for production

DURATION OF COURSE:

The duration of the course will be 12 weeks (One and a half days a week), and sessions will be every Tuesday and Saturday.

VENUE: Bush Radio, 330 Victoria Road, Salt River, 7925

COST: No charge for tuition, training and materials as this training is sponsored by MAPPP-SETA. Successful candidates will pay a registration fee of R200.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION:

•     Candidates must have a Matric or Grade 12 Certificate

•     Must be unemployed volunteers for any Community radio station in the Western Cape

•     Must be computer literate

•     Must be available to attend an open day on the Thursday, 2 December 2010

•     If selected, must be available to attend compulsory induction programme from the 13 – 17 December 2010 (includes 16th December).

In order for your application to be considered, all applications must include the following documents:

– completed application form (DOWNLOAD HERE)

– copy of your matric certificate

– a signed reference letter from the station indicating your involvement

RIP Boeta Hotep

Hotep Galeta (1941 - 2010)

Bush Radio mourns the loss of one of our mentors, teacher and volunteer, Hotep Galeta.

Earlier today the Bush Radio newsteam reported that Hotep Galeta passed away at his home.

Boeta Hotep, as many at the station knew him, played an important role in developing some of the stations jazz programmes and also assisted with developing projects that used music to help with education and healing.
