In the days before the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA ) or the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA ) and licenses for community radio, Bush Radio did (and still does) what we termed field broadcasts – “broadcasts” using a PA and not connected to a transmitter from various areas in the Cape Flats.
This picture was taken at one of these field broadcasts from Nyanga Junction in 1994.

Bush Radio as we reach 17 years of legal community radio broadcasting in South Africa. Besides some of the fun activities planned for our birthday month we are also taking the opportunity of looking back and reflecting on the struggle to free the airwaves in South Africa and look at how we keep it free.
Bush Radio is also in the process of digitising its extensive archive of recordings and photographs and below is a sample of some the pictures – see if you can spot yourself and if you have material that you think belongs in the archive let us know .

In 1997 Bush Radio moved from Queenspark Avenue (where Voice of the Cape is now) to our current premises at 330 Victoria Road . It took a long hard slog to turn the building from an open plan warehouse into broadcasting studios but we managed to do it.
Just after the move we invited the then Minister of Telecommunications, Post and Broadcasting, Jay Naidoo to officially open our studio.

Jay Naidoo was the founding General Secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), the country’s largest federation of unions, which played a leading role in the struggle for freedom in South Africa. He served two successive terms before forming part of South Africa’s first democratic government. From 1994 to 1999, he was Minister in the President’s Office responsible for the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) and later Minister of Telecommunications, Post and Broadcasting in Nelson Mandela’s cabinet .

Today Bush Radio celebrates with the rest of the world the 20th anniversary of the release of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela from prison. This morning Victor and Shiraaz paid tribute to him and we also managed to find his first press conference audio in our archives (See below).
